Why the hilltops decide who controls Judea and Samaria
Think of Samaria’s north as two levels: high rocky ridges, and the low Jordan Valley to the east. For years those ridges acted like a wall. Terror groups in the hill towns could not easily reach the Israeli farming communities in the Valley. Checkpoints in the mountain passes helped.
That wall eventually failed. Attackers crossed the ridges, reached the main Valley road, and killed Jews. Local Jewish farmers concluded that living only in the lowland was not enough. They had to be on the peaks that look down on the roads and towns.
Elisha Yered’s point is this: Building towns while leaving the open high ground to the other side is a losing idea. Oslo’s Areas A and B now block Jewish footholds on peaks that still sit empty — Bezek, Gadir, Khureish, Truja, Tel Aruma, Ridge 917, and more. Yered warns that a short delay may mean those heights are lost.
