In a first in years, *Israel’s Civil Administration has filed a financial lawsuit against a settler, demanding he cover the costs of demolishing his home.* *The defendant*, Elisha Yered, a prominent settlement activist in the Shomron hills and former spokesman for MK Limor Son Har-Melech, *is being sued for nearly 60,000 shekels.*
The lawsuit covers demolition operations carried out in 2021–2022. *The legal tool was originally developed in the final days of the Bennett-Lapid government, shelved after its fall, and is now being revived under the current right-wing government, with the Civil Administration — under Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s authority*— using it for the first time.
Authorities view the measure as a new deterrent tool against illegal outposts, allowing enforcement without arrests. *Yered warns that the precedent could later be turned against the broader settlement movement, including agricultural farms, regardless of who is in power.* He was reportedly chosen as a test case.
