Just two weeks after thermal drones were provided to frontier settlement hills, one helped foil an arson attack last weekend. Residents of Givat Ma’aleh Tidhar, near Metzad in Gush Etzion, spotted a suspicious figure emerging from the nearby village of Sa’ir and approaching dry vegetation shortly before Shabbat.
The hill’s security officer quickly launched a drone, which filmed a woman from Sa’ir’s Hamrosh neighborhood lighting successive fires with a burning rag. She added dry thorns to fuel the blaze, hoping the wind would carry it toward the hill. When she realized she had been detected, she fled back to the village.
Residents rushed to the scene, extinguished the fire before it could spread, and alerted security forces. No arrests have been reported. The clear drone footage confirms the act was deliberate arson terrorism, leaving little room for claims it was accidental. There have been no reports of her arrest or the arrest of any additional suspects.
