Tal Yinon Dardik, a settlement pioneer and father of four, has been on a 10-day hunger strike in prison and fainted yesterday. Held under administrative detention by Central Command’s Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth, Dardik was recently ordered to house arrest at his hard-of-hearing mother-in-law’s home without her consent or prior notice. When she refused, he was arrested for “violating” the order.
Although Defense Minister Yisrael Katz canceled certain administrative arrest orders, Central Command has continued issuing others, creating what his brother Idan calls a “back door” tactic.
Neither Tal nor his family fully understands the basis of the detention, making defense nearly impossible. A court initially ordered his release, but the decision was overturned on appeal by Judge Hagit Mak Kalmanowitz.
Bereaved families have launched a strong campaign demanding his immediate release, arguing that such treatment of Jewish settlers is unacceptable. Tal, described as a stubborn idealist, vows to continue the strike until the orders are revoked. His family urges Minister Katz to instruct Central Command to end the detention.
