“Operation Guardian of the Walls” in 2021: What have we learned since?
During the May 2021 “Guardian of the Walls” riots, when violence erupted across Israel, Arab terrorists from the village of Burqa carried out a serious attack in the Benjamin region.
Under heavy fog they infiltrated the Oz Tzion hilltop near Givat Assaf junction and hurled firebombs into a building where four young men were sleeping. The youths awoke and fled the burning structure, escaping with only minor injuries; the incident could easily have caused fatalities.
Security forces investigated and determined that the attackers had deliberately attempted to murder the residents. Within weeks the IDF arrested three suspects from Burqa, who confessed to the attack.
Despite the clear intent and the military courts’ responsibility for security in Judea and Samaria, the defendants received prison sentences of less than six years. This signals weak deterrence and encourages further attacks against Jews.
