Genesis 13:2  And Avram was very rich with livestock.

The shepherd of Ma’ale Tidhar is now returning for a lunch break from the grazing fields (see video above). To conquer the land, he uses drones in the sky and goats on the ground.

The Hebrew name is מעלה תדהר. It is a hilltop/outpost  in the Gush Etzion area, west of the settlements of Metzad and Pnei Kedem. A group of young settlers with a flock established it in mid-2025, and named it in memory of Tidhar (תדהר) Gozlan, a young pioneer from the Kochav HaShachar area who was killed in a tractor accident.

Shepherding Cultivates Compassion and Mercy

Shepherding trains a person to notice and care for each individual according to its unique needs, rather than treating the group as a mass. This is the classic reason G-d chooses leaders from among shepherds.

  • The Midrash (Shemot Rabbah 2:2): While Moshe tended Jethro’s flock, a kid ran away. Moshe pursued it until it reached water and drank. He said, “I did not know you ran because you were thirsty. You must be tired.”  Moshe carried it back on his shoulders. G-d declared: “You have shown compassion in tending the sheep of flesh and blood; by your life, you will shepherd My flock, Israel.”
